Believe it or not, we've been asked this question! Some varieties of popcorn are "ok" for dogs to eat, but others can be dangerous or even deadly for them. We've included some key questions you need to ask yourself when deciding whether or not it’s safe for your dog to eat popcorn! Keep reading to learn more!

Popcorn...crunchy and satisfying for humans.

Popcorn has a similar texture to many kinds of cereal, making it a crunchy and satisfying snack for humans. Although it can be safe for dogs to eat under most circumstances but is not always recommended since some dogs may have different allergies or sensitivities than others.

What's so bad about popcorn if your dog eats it?

Most of the time, a bit of popcorn is relatively safe for dogs to eat. A lot of owners are under the assumption that because corn is a cereal grain, and most grains have the potential to cause digestive issues for pets (like vomiting or diarrhea), popcorn must be harmful too. However, most of the time, if you drop a few kernels on the floor and your dog swoops in before you're able to grab it...you probably don't need to freak out too much.

How should I treat my dog if it ate some popcorn?

If your dog ate popcorn and is acting happy and healthy, it should be fine. If he's vomiting or having diarrhea, contact a veterinarian. When in doubt, check with your vet before giving your dog any "human" snacks!

Allergic reactions in pets are real and dangerous

When it comes to food, cats and dogs are very similar in the sense that they can be allergic to different things. Some people assume that because popcorn is a whole grain it must be ok for dogs, but this is not always the case. People should first check to see if their dog has any allergies before offering them popcorn!

So...is it safe for my dog to eat popcorn?

In short, air-popped popcorn in a small quantity is ok for a dog to eat. However...flavored, buttery, oily popcorn maybe not so much! In general, if a few kernels of delicious BOHEMiYUM fall on the floor while you're digging into the bottom of your bag, and your dog eats it up...don't worry too much.

Would we recommend feeding them popcorn regularly? Nope, we definitely don't recommend it!

(BTW this is not medical advice :-)
